The rich, prosperous and fertile land of Sicily has been wished and conquered over the centuries by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Normans, Arabs and many other civilisations.
I will take you to discover the Villa Romana del Casale, an authentic historical treasure dating back to the 4th century AD. This villa, with its impressive 4,000 square metres of polychrome marble mosaic floors, represents one of the largest extensions of in situ mosaics in the world. In 1997 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Guided Tour of the Roman Villa del Casale
During our tour, you will immerse yourself in the daily life of the high aristocracy of the 4th century AD. Inside the villa, we will explore the baths, where you can imagine the warmth of the calidarium and the sound of the Gela River flowing in the frigidarium, before proceeding to visit the guest flats. Here, the magnificent mosaics will transport us to scenes of fishing, hunting and banquets, giving us a singular view of life in those times.
Next, we will make our way to the public area of the villa, where we will explore the basilica and walk through the impressive corridor of the great hunt to the exotic animals (lions, tigers, elephants, leopards), which offers a spectacular representation of geo-politics and the Roman Empire and the known world in the 4th century AD.
Finally, we will complete our journey by exploring the private flats of the domina and dominus, immersing ourselves even further into the life and customs of the Roman aristocracy.
